IT WAS as if I was attuned to Dario’s body in a different way since I’d seen him perform that night. I mean, I started to notice all of these tiny things—meaningless things, really—in the way he moved himself from place A to place B. In how he stepped into the subway like he owned it… in how he tossed his loose black bangs sideways off of his forehead with a thrust of a single shoulder… in how he hovered close beside me at all times.

“Want to get something to eat?” He turned to me, his perfect features wrinkled quizzically in an effort to read my mood.

But I could only stare at his mouth as he spoke.

“Backstage, somebody delivered a huge fruit basket to us. So I don’t need food right now, if you don’t.”

I nodded, and then I shook my head.

“Are you okay, Philippe? You are acting sort of strange.”

“You were amazing.” The words fell out of my mouth.

Dario smiled just enough that I knew he was pleased. “You liked it?”

I nodded again. “Um, Dario, please… come back to my hotel… with me… right now.”

When Dario stopped short to gawk at me, the guy walking behind him on the sidewalk literally crashed into his backside. “Oh, sorry,” Dario said as the guy sent him a “get with the program” glance and stepped around us.

“Come back to my room…. I want to… to be….” Dario seemed to get the picture, although I’m not exactly sure how.

“You don’t have to ask me three times.” He grabbed my hand, stepped to the edge of the street, and flagged down a cab.
